Abstract

This study examined the role of participatory communication and community radio in promoting financial inclusion for sustainable rural development in Nigeria. Rural communities in Nigeria continue to face significant barriers to accessing formal financial services due to poverty, illiteracy, inadequate banking infrastructure, and poor digital connectivity. Participatory communication and community radio have emerged as effective communication tools for disseminating financial information, improving financial literacy, and enhancing awareness of digital financial services among rural populations. The study adopted a descriptive and analytical review approach using secondary data obtained from scholarly journals, government reports, institutional publications, and related literature on financial inclusion and rural communication systems. Findings revealed that community radio programmes significantly improve awareness of mobile banking, microfinance services, savings culture, digital payment systems, and agricultural financing opportunities among rural dwellers. The study further identified education, language accessibility, trust, infrastructural development, and digital literacy as major determinants influencing rural financial inclusion. However, inadequate funding, poor electricity supply, limited internet access, and weak rural communication infrastructure continue to constrain effective utilization of community radio and participatory communication systems. The study concludes that participatory communication and community radio remain strategic instruments for promoting inclusive finance, reducing poverty, and supporting sustainable rural development in Nigeria. The paper recommends increased government support for community broadcasting, expansion of rural digital infrastructure, and collaboration among financial institutions, communication agencies, and rural development stakeholders.
